You have probably seen attractive metal mesh structures filled with stones in the urban landscape or in suburban areas, creating spectacular walls or fences. These are gabions - an innovative solution that combines aesthetic appeal and high functionality.
What are gabions in engineering terms?
Gabions are mesh structures made of galvanized or PVC-coated steel mesh filled with various materials: stones, crushed stone, pebbles, glass, or other loose materials. They are widely used in construction (fences, terraces), hydraulic engineering (strengthening of the coastline), landscape design (benches, gazebos, fire pits, stairs, borders, walls, decorative elements) and even for military purposes.
Gabions in the practice of Kyivtransbud
Over the 19 years of Kyivtransbud's operations, gabions have been used at 5 sites with a total length of 17,856 meters and a volume of 3,189 m³. These are retaining walls with a height of two meters or more, strengthening the boundaries of land plots in:
- Sumy, Sumy region
- Uman, Cherkasy region
- Zarvantsiakh, Vinnytsia region
- Chabanakh, Kyiv region
- Ruzhychantsi, Khmelnytskyi region
Amounts. Volume - 353 m³, length - 112 m

You can see the construction progress of the Epicenter shopping center in Sumy on the facility's page.
Uman. Volume - 222 m³, length - 141 m

Zarvantsi. Volume - 660 m³, length: - 130 m

A record-breaking project in Ruzhychanka, Khmelnytskyi region
A special place in our practice is occupied by the construction of a logistics hub in Khmelnytskyi. This project is impressive in its scale:
- The length of the gabion fortifications: 2,300 meters
- Gabion volume: 15 000 м³
- Height differences: up to 14.5 meters

The complex terrain of the site required the construction of gabion walls around the entire perimeter, as well as inside the territory. This project was a real challenge for our engineers, and we are proud to say that we have successfully completed it.

Advantages of gabions:
- Durability and longevity: gabions can withstand heavy loads and last for decades.
- Speed: the construction of retaining walls made of gabions is much faster than when using concrete reinforcements, stone or brick.
- Cost: the installation of gabions does not require the use of mortars that require time to harden.
- Environmental friendliness: the use of natural materials makes gabions safe for the environment.
- Aesthetic appeal: gabions fit perfectly into any landscape.
- Versatility: similar to a construction set, gabion structures can be easily adapted to the landscape, changed in geometry and shape, as well as changed the type of filler or combined.
What determines the price of a gabion structure
- From the design itself (height, length, width, type of connection of individual elements).
- Depending on the place of application. Preparatory work for the installation of gabion retaining walls or shoreline reinforcement will be much more complex, large-scale, and, accordingly, more expensive than for the installation of a fence on a flat site. The cost of installing gabions will also be affected by the need to use geotextiles, strip foundations, and groundwater and precipitation drainage.
- The size and shape of the reinforcing mesh. The thicker the weave, the more expensive it is.
- Its thickness or combinations of different thicknesses directly affect the cost.
- The type of mesh coating. The use of galvanized or PVC coated mesh also affects the cost of the structure.
- It depends on the chosen filler. The cheapest filler can be coarse granite crushed stone. More expensive (in ascending order of cost) will be granite rubble, quartzite, pebbles of various sizes, basalt, granite paving stones, and eccles (decorative glass).
Gabions - is not only a functional, but also an aesthetic solution for fortifying territories. The construction company Kyivtransbud has extensive experience in using gabions and is ready to implement projects of any complexity. So we invite you to cooperate!
